Wildcats girls soccer defeats West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY — Columbus put up a girls soccer win Thursday when it went to the Comets field and came away with a 3-1 win over West Liberty.
The Wildcats held a 2-1 lead on the Comets (2-4) at halftime and add an insurance goal in the second half.
Odalyz Valdez tallied a goal and an assist for Columbus as did Alexa Alcala. Juvixsa Valdez scored a goal. Aaliyah Santos contributed an assist.
Columbus (4-2) plays at Mid-Prairie (6-3) today.
Wildcats blanked
After entering the Class 1A rankings at No. 13 this past week, the Columbus boys have suffered two 10-0 losses and a 6-2 loss, all to ranked 1A teams. No. 7 Mid-Prairie had a 6-2 win Monday. The No. 2 Notre Dame Nikes (11-0) won at Columbus Tuesday and No. 4 West Liberty (7-2) defeated the visiting Wildcats Thursday.
Columbus (5-4) plays at Central Lee (2-4) Tuesday.
Highland scores on Notre Dame
RIVERSIDE — No. 2 Notre Dame took an 11-1 win from Highland.
The Huskies scored in the first half against the visitors. Only one other team — Class 2A No. 12 Fort Madison — had scored on the Nikes.
Tuesday a team will get a first win with the Huskies (0-5) playing at Wapello (0-8) Tuesday.
Ravens edged by Mediapolis
KALONA — Mediapolis, a team receiving votes in the rankings took a 1-0 win over Hillcrest.
Aiden Krabill notched six saves for Hillcrest but faced seven shots.
With a strong wind, favoring Mediapolis in the first half, Hillcrest dropped an extra player into the midfield. The strategy held the visitors without a score until a minute before the half when a shot bounced in front of Krabill and squirted into the net.
Hillcrest (2-3) will not play for a week then has two games within 20 hours. Friday the Ravens are at Wapello at 7 p.m., then host Tipton at home Saturday at 2 p.m.
