Wildcats pin Panthers in opener

COLUMBUS — The 2023 boys wrestling season kicked off on Tuesday in Columbus, as Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union hosted Mt. Pleasant in a non-conference battle.

It was all Wildcats, as Columbus used seven pins to defeat Mt. Pleasant 64-15.

Columbus/WMU collected a pair of pins at 138 pounds and 144 pounds, as Bowen Thompson and Kohlby Newsom racked up wins. After a Mt. Pleasant win, the Wildcats racked up three-straight pins from Trevor Phillips at 157, Cole Storm at 165 and Kason Dopler at 175.

Columbus’ other pins came from Russel Coil at 185 and Ty Scorpil at 132.

Mt. Pleasant had three wins on the day. Payton Walker and Will Birdsell picked up pins at 190 pounds and 215 pounds, and Ramzy Davis won on a 10-7 decision at 150.
