Despite an early goal from Mid-Prairie senior Ricky Vargas, the Columbus boys? soccer team continued rolling on Friday night.
The Class 1A, No. 15 ranked Wildcats capped off a busy week with a 3-1 win over the Golden Hawks on Friday afternoon, improving to 7-0 on the season.
?The work we did in the preseason is showing,? Columbus head coach Luis Cacho said. ?We played West Liberty on Monday and Danville on Tuesday, so it was a long week, but we were ready for it. Mid-Prairie was a good contest for us. They scored on us first and we had to adjust.?
After Vargas? early goal, the Wildcats responded with a heavy dose of pressure, until a mess in front of the net ended with Jacob Tiffany notching his first goal of the year.
A defensive handball in the box led to Columbus? Erick Cantarerro notching a goal late in the first half, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 halftime lead.
Cantarerro found the back of the net once again in the second half, connecting on a good cross from Diego Sanchez, completing the scoring on the day.
?We weren?t hitting our forwards? feet,? Mid-Prairie head coach Pat Cady said. ?That?s something that we need to work on, but when you look at this game it could have been a 2-1 game without the PK. We are injured and fighting, but we have to play with what we have.?
Mid-Prairie (1-5) will face Highland on Monday afternoon, while Columbus will face Holy Trinity at home on Tuesday.
