WASHINGTON ? Fairfield ran into a fifth-ranked Williamsburg squad strong in all the right places and saw its dual season quickly put to an end Tuesday night in Washington.
Williamsburg entered the Class 2A regional dual competition with a 20-2 record and downed Fairfield by a scored of 46-17. The Red Raiders went on to dismantle Davis County 47-21 to qualify for the state dual tournament. Davis County got past Solon 52-22 in the other semifinal.
?We wrestled hard and I was proud of our effort, but Williamsburg is a very solid team. There just are no real soft spots in their lineup,? said Fairfield head coach Bob Glenn. ?Still, I feel it was a positive experience for us, and there is no reason why we can not use this dual to prepare us for the intensity of Saturday?s district tournament.?
Eight Trojans who were in action Tuesday will be aiming for a trip to the state individual tournament at the district tourney in West Liberty Saturday. Dakota Simmons, Michael Hammes, Jac Pilcher and Jeff Guttry are included in that group and made up the foursome that earned wins against Williamsburg.
Simmons and Hammes both came through with major decisions at 125 and 152, respectively, Pilcher gained a quick win by fall at 160 and Guttry won a 6-2 decision in his 171-pound match.
The match of the night featured top-ranked and 2010 state champion Austin Blythe clashing with Fairfield?s fourth-ranked Michael Smithburg in a heavyweight bout. Blythe ended up on top of a 5-2 score and moves his season record to 43-1 while Smithburg has still never taken a pin in his career.
?No doubt, it was a very good 285-pound match between two big athletes with a lot of skill,? Glenn said.
Along with Smithburg, Ammon Shaner, Jacob Mineart and Seth Davisson will be headed to the district tournament after suffering losses Tuesday. Davisson?s loss came on a sudden victory in overtime, 4-2, against a fellow sophomore district qualifier Corbin Blythe.
Saturday?s district tourney will begin at noon include qualifiers from the sectional at Davenport Assumption.
