Winfield-Mount Union 5th, Mid-Prairie 12th at West Liberty boys golf tournament

WEST LIBERTY — A pair of area schools were in West Liberty on Tuesday to compete in the Comets’ home golf tournament. Over an 18-hole course, Winfield-Mount Union tied for fifth with Camanche, shooting a 378. Mid-Prairie took 12th, ending at 419.
Winfield-Mount Union’s Andrew Brown had a strong night, shooting an 87 to lead the Wolves. Brown scored 47 on the front nine and 40 on the back nine to wind up as the Wolves’ leading golfer.
Jake Edwards shot a 92 for the Wolves’ second scorer. Carter Loyd finished at 96. Griffin Humphreys ended at 103, and Isaac Schurr shot a 118.
Mid-Prairie’s Drew Schlabaugh finished at 93 to lead the Golden Hawks. Schlabaugh shot a 46 on the front nine and a 47 on the back.
The Golden Hawks’ second-best score went to Warren Scarff, who finished the meet with a 101. Ben Mattes shot a 111. Ian Schmidt ended at 114, and Carson Pence shot 138.
West Branch narrowly edged Tipton for the team title, winning by one stroke.
