Coaches know the power of a team.
An unbeaten league record and an undefeated regular season are history-making achievements and Winfield-Mount Union has been rewriting history books in sports this season.
Winfield-Mount Union dominated the other teams in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division this girls basketball season and it was evident from the coaches selections of the SEISC North First Team.
Nine players were placed on the top squad and four of them were Wolves. None of the WMU players scoring average was in the double digits. Farrah Nelson (14th in North at 8.5 points a game), Bradie Buffington (13th in North at 8.6 points a game), Kyndal Townsley (17th at 7.1), and Jobey Malone (21st at 6.4) all were selected at the top of the squad. Pekin's Kerrigan Pope joined them.
Pope was third in the North with 15.4 points per game. First and second scoring averages were Player of the Year Kylee Sanders of Louisa-Muscatine at 23.3 and Hallie Mohr of Mediapolis at 22.3. Sanders was also first in rebounds per game at 11.6.
Highland sophomore Dani Laughlin, who was fourth in the North at 14.9 points per game, was a second team selection as were Pekin seniors Sohpie Wittrock (12th in North at 9.0 points per game) and Erika Coleman (fifth at 10.0).
The closest North Division game the Wolves played was a 68-62 home win over perennial power Mediapolis Dec. 15 until a 44-43 road win against Louisa-Muscatine Feb. 2. Sanders scored 17 in the game to go over 1,300 points for her career, but a final quarter rally from six points down kept the Wolves record unblemished.
Nelson was third in the North in offensive rebounds per game at 3.5. WMU had three of the top four field goal percentages with Melina Oepping (second at 56.3), Keetyn Townsley (50.6) and Bradie Buffington (48.1). Buffington was third in blocks per game at 1.5 and Pope was fifth at 1.1. Wikerson was fourth in assists at 2.8 per game.
