WINFIELD — There’s a buzz surrounding Winfield-Mt. Union and rightfully so.
For the first time since 1999, Winfield-Mt. Union will be heading back to Iowa high school football’s state semifinals.
On Monday night the Winfield-Mt. Union faithful gathered inside the Wolves gym to celebrate the 2023 team’s accomplishment.
In front of a packed crowd, Winfield-Mt. Union High School Principal Gaige Gill kicked things off with a speech highlighting the perseverance and dedication of the student athletes, while pointing out how supportive the students have been toward his family joining the community.
Gill was followed by head football coach Scott McCarty.
McCarty reiterated Gill’s points of dedication and hardwork, but also thanked the community for their overwhelming support throughout the season.
The pep rally continued with the WMU fight song and a video highlighting the Wolves season and what it means to wear the WMU red with features from numerous players.
The rally concluded with some words from senior wide receiver and safety Carter Loyd, who talked about the support the team has gotten all season.
Following Loyd, gatherers were invited down to give words of encouragement to the plays as well as have posters signed.
Winfield-Mt. Union will take on Bishop Garrigan beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
