WINFIELD — After losing a lot of talent last season, Winfield-Mt. Union reloaded this year and once again put together another stellar regular season campaign that ended with a shot at the conference title.
On Tuesday night, the Wolves’ title hopes were reliant on downing Southeast Iowa Super Conference foe Wapello.
Both the Wolves and Arrows entered the contest undefeated in conference play, but when all was said and done it was Wapello walking away with the North title with a 3-0 win, 25-10, 25-21 and 25-15.
Things started out great for Winfield-Mt. Union as a pair of kills from Audrie Gipple pushed the Wolves to an eventual 5-1 lead.
The Wolves made it 7-3 after a kill from Mariana Hagmeier.
But from that point on, it was all Wapello as WMU scored just three more points the rest of the match.
Wapello scored eight straight points to take a 11-7 advantage.
A kill from Kellee Milks made it 11-8, but once again the Arrows put together a big run. The Arrows scored four straight, then another four, followed by six more to end it.
Set two saw the Wolves leap out to a nice lead once again.
Six straight errors by the Arrows gave the Wolves a 7-2 lead.
The Wolves got up by as much as six at 14-8, but Wapello hung around.
Three straight kills from the Arrows kicked off what would be an 8-0 run by Wapello and a turning point in the game.
The Arrows led 16-14 after the run.
However, WMU didn’t give up.
WMU got up as much as three late at 21-18, but they wouldn’t score again as Wapello scored the final seven points.
In the final set of the night, it was once again the Wolves who led early, but again a big lead dissipated.
WMU led by as much as six at 7-1, but nine unanswered from Wapello gave it a 10-7 lead and they would never trail.
The Wolves came within two twice, but the Arrows ran away with it late.
WMU senior outside hitter Audrie Gipple had seven kills and 10 digs in the loss.
Senior setter Aurey Meeker dished out 11 assists to go with three serving aces and 10 digs. Sophomore hitter Kellee Milks finished with seven kills.
WMU drops to 17-13 overall and finishes conference play with a 7-1 record.
WMU will begin postseason play on Monday by hosting Danville in the first round of the Class 1A Region 8 tournament.
