Winfield-Mt. Union’s Crooked Creek FFA chapter has seen success as of recently.
Two student members attended the FFA Subdistricts held at Louisa-Muscatine Schools on Monday, Feb. 21.
Carter Loyd participated in the Chapter Test and earned a bronze award. Beatrice Anderson participated in the Discovery Test and came away with a first place gold award.
Students also attended Districts held at Pekin Schools on Saturday, March 12. Katie Miller and Beatrice Anderson competed in the Discovery Test and represented the Crooked Creek chapter as voting delegates during the business session.
Anderson placed first overall and earned a gold award, while Miller placed fourth and earned a silver award.
The test the students take cover a degree of FFA knowledge, which includes history, knowledge of FFA officer positions and current membership number for the state of Iowa to name a select few.
Each test is based on grade level and the well of knowledge each participant is expected or needs for the tests.
In order for the students to participate or compete above the local or chapter level, they have to be considered an active member Winfield-Mt. Union Agriculture Education Instructor and FFA adviser Amanda Brown said.
They must also be enrolled in an agriculture class during the current school year and be dues paying member. Only then they get to select the contest they would like to participate in.
Brown says shes proud of the kids interest and dedication to agriculture and hopes that they continue to show their interest in whatever they decided to do.
“My hope is they are, at a minimum, as proud of themselves as I am of them for their accomplishments,” Brown said. “I, of course, also hope they continue to pursue their interests in agriculture, no matter what sector of the industry that may be as agriculture is an incredibly wide reaching industry.”
