WINFIELD — Winfield Mt. Union has all the tools to be dominant on the football field this fall.
While the Wolves are without 10 seniors from 2021 some big weapons return for the 2022-23 season.
Leading the offense this fall will once again be star junior Cam Buffington.
Buffington had an outstanding sophomore campaign in which he amassed over 1,000 yards through the air and the ground. He threw for 1,195 yards and 17 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,028 yards and 18 touchdowns.
In 2022 Buffington is look to add to an already great high school stat line.
Also seeing carries for the Wolves this fall will be junior Cole Milks. Milks was third in rushing yards last year with 102, behind only Buffington and graduate Noah Sparrow (141 yards).
Senior’s Caleb Giese and David Garcia were both handed the ball over 10 times last year. Sophomore Lane Genkinger had 10 rushes as well. They’re all sure to see touches again as well.
Junior standout Abram Edwards, along with Giese will lead the way in receiving.
Edwards led the Wolves with 28 receptions for 586 yards and nine touchdowns last year.
Giese followed close behind with 435 yards and six touchdowns on 22 receptions.
Carter Loyd, a junior, also will be a target. Loyd had six receptions for 74 yards in 2021.
Winfield gets a lot of its top defenders back this fall.
Buffington and Edwards paced the Wolves last season with 55 and 43 tackles each.
Graduates Sparrow and Sullivan Scott were third and fourth on the tackles list, but the Wolves have plenty of talent to fill those roles.
The Wolves open the season in Martensdale against Audubon.
Following the opening contest, the Wolves will take on the same opposition as last season, giving them the opportunity to avenge losses to New London, WACO and English Valleys.
