Winfield-Mt. Union knocked out in Sigourney

SIGOURNEY - The Winfield-Mt. Union girls had a tough task in their regional quarterfinal game on Wednesday night. The Wolves took on No. 15 Sigourney after Friday's upset win over WACO, but the Wolves couldn't pull their magic twice in a row, falling 41-17.
The Wolves took an early lead on a two-point shot from Liana Sweezer, but Sigourney scored the next seven points and never relinquished the lead.
W-MU struggled to solve Sigourney's defense all night long. The Savages led 9-4 after the first period and 24-8 at halftime. Sigourney stretched its lead to 33-11 after three quarters.
The Wolves' had their best quarter in the fourth, putting up six points. Sigourney held W-MU to less than five points in each of the first three periods.
Sweezer, the Wolves' only senior, finished the game with a team-leading six points. Jobey Malone had five poins and 10 rebounds. Farrah Nelson, Kayla Edwards and Jami Wilkerson each scored two.
The Savages were able to shut out W-MU leading scorer Jenna Buffington, but she did lead the Wolves in assists, with two.
The Wolves finished the season 5-17. Sigourney moved on to play Holy Trinity in the regional semifinals. Holy Trinity upended Notre Dame 55-51 in their quarterfinal.
In other Class 1A Region 5 action, No. 3 Montezuma blasted Moravia 82-16, and Keota beat Moulton-Udell 50-33.
