Winfield-Mt. Union splits at Lone Tree

LONE TREE - Winfield-Mt. Union took one of two on the diamonds at Lone Tree on Thursday night. The softball team scored a 5-1 comeback victory after scoring five runs in the sixth inning, and the baseball team lost a wild one, 20-10.
W-MU softball had some offensive struggles through the first five innings. Lone Tree scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Lady Wolves' backs were against the walls after a scoreless fifth frame.
W-MU strung together five runs on three RBIs in the sixth frame. Keetyn Townsley, Anna Anderson and Jobey Malone all knocked in one run.
Madie Anderson gave up just one earned run over sixth innings, giving up four hits and one walk, while striking out 11 batters in the win.
Molly Miller was 2-3 with a triple. Kyndal Townsley was 2-3 with two stolen bases. Keetyn and Anna each went 1-3 with an RBI.
The W-MU baseball team held a temporary 1-0 lead after the top of the first, but Lone Tree responded with an eight-run bottom of the inning. The Wolves cut the lead to 8-6 with a five-run second. Lone Tree responded with five of their own to take a 13-6 advantage.
W-MU cut the lead to 13-9 in the top of the third and then 14-10 in the fifth, but Lone Tree scored five in the fourth and one more in the fifth to win the game via the 10-run rule.
Brody Barton went 3-4 with three RBIs in the loss. Dawson Bergthold went 2-2 with an RBI. Jacob Ford was 2-4 with an RBI, and Nick Davis was 0-1 with an RBI.
Nathan Crow took the loss on the mound. He gave up 11 runs (six earned) on two hits and eight walks, while striking out one batter. Jared Arnold and Noah Sparrow also threw in the loss.
The W-MU softball team is now 14-8. The baseball team is 1-16. W-MU baseball will travel to Sigourney tonight (Monday) for a nonconference game. The softball team will take on Danville on Tuesday, July 2.
