Winfield-Mt. Union stays at No. 11
Wolves sit just one spot outside the top 10 in Class 1A girls basketball rankings

WINFIELD — Another week down and the Winfield-Mt. Union girls basketball team still holds a spot in the Class 1A Iowa Girls High School Basketball Rankings.
The list, which was released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union on Thursday, has the Wolves slotted at No. 11. WMU is unchanged from last weeks rankings.
What a season it’s been thus far for the Wolves, amassing an 11-0 record. Winfield-Mt. Union is the lone Class 1A team to have an 11 game win total.
After a week off for Christmas break, the Wolves got back into action on Tuesday against Southeast Iowa Super Conference North foe Hillcrest Academy. The Wolves downed the Ravens highhandedly, 63-4. The victory marks the Wolves first win of 2023 and moves their North Division record to 8-0, two games ahead of second place WACO, 6-1.
Through the 11 games, the Warriors have given the Wolves their closest game of the season. That game ended with WMU on top, 46-39.
Thus far, the Wolves are averaging 57.5 points per game while holding their opponents to a whopping 22.2 points per game.
Senior Bradie Buffington leads the Wolves in points and rebounds. Buffington averages 16.3 points a game, while pulling down 8.7 boards. She shoots with a 52 percent clip from the field.
Fellow Senior Melina Oepping follows with 12 points a contest, grabbing eight boards per game and averaging 3.1 steals. Oepping has a 47.9 percent field goal percentage.
Keetyn Townsley, who is also a senior, averages 10.1 points per game. Townsley averages 3.1 steals as well. She holds a 48.4 field goal percentage and knocks down 50 percent of her threes.
Senior Keely Malone, averages 8.1 points per game and leads the Wolves in assists with 5.0 a game.
Rounding out the Wolves in scoring is sophomore Josie Nelson with 3.1 a game, senior Anna Anderson and junior Mariana Hagmeier each with 2.9 points per game. Anderson’s 2.3 assists per game, ranks second on the team as well.
The Wolves will looking to make is 12 in a row on Friday, Jan. 6 against North Division opponent Lone Tree.
Following that game, the Wolves will travel to Mediapolis to take on the Bulletts, who are currently rated No. 13 in Class 2A.
