Winfield-Mt. Union swept by Pekin

WINFIELD - The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams couldn't solve SEISC North Division rival Pekin on Tuesday night in a conference doubleheader. The Lady Wolves fell 52-16 and the boys dropped their game 77-43.
In the girls' game, Pekin led 10-5 after one quarter and exploded in the second period to take a 30-8 lead into halftime. From that point on it was all Panthers, who put up double digits in all four quarters of the game.
Jenna Buffington had seven points and 12 rebounds in the loss. Kyndal Townsley and Jobey Malone had thre points apiece. Liana Sweezer had two points and seven rebounds, and Ali Cockerham scored one point. Jami Wilkerson didn't score in the loss, but led the team with three steals.
The boys were able to score early but Pekin's offenive output was too much. The Wolves trailed 25-13 after the first quarter and 42-22 at the half. Pekin scored at least 14 points in each of the four quarters.
Despite the loss, Daunte Oepping had a good start to the season, scoring 11 points and leading the Wolves with five assists and two steals. Christian Gerot and Josh Burroughs each scored four.
Jared Arnold and Bryce Wade had four each in the loss. Graham Hagge scored three points. Juanito Piper and Ty Yocum had two points each, and Dawson Bergthold finished with one. Yocum led the team in rebounds, with five.
The W-MU girls fell to 0-3 on the season, and the boys dropped to 0-1. The Wolves will take on Wapello on Friday, Nov. 30 in another SEISC North Division doubleheader.
