BURLINGTON — Winfield-Mt. Union boys basketball’s season came to an end on Thursday night as the Wolves were defeated 66-40 by Notre Dame.
The Wolves (14-10) hung with the Nikes (18-4) early in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference clash, but could never get on top.
After a closely contested first quarter, Notre Dame only extended it lead.
With over two minutes left in the third quarter, the Wolves found themselves down just 10, 39-29, after a pair of free throws from Cody Milks.
But the Wolves never hit another field goal the rest of the quarter. In fact, WMU scored just one point in the final 2:24 on a foul shot from Jake Edwards.
Meanwhile an 8-0 run culminated in a 10-1 swing through that span.
Heading into the final period, Notre Dame led 49-30. The Nikes continued to add to their lead through the early stages of the fourth.
The Nikes scored nine straight points to begin the final frame before the Wolves got on the board.
Nicholas Sparrow notched five points himself, followed by a three from Max Edwards to spark a 8-2 run by the Wolves to make it 60-38, but the deficit was too great.
“It was good,” Winfield-Mt. Union head coach Klay Edwards said of the teams growth. “We talked if you go back and look at the start of our year, it looked like we weren’t going to get to 14 wins. They continued to work throughout the year and I think you saw tonight. Our sophomore and juniors played pretty well. They got a lot better throughout the year. I’m proud of the way they continued to work all season and make those strides.”
Winfield-Mt. Union was led by Nicholas Sparrow with 15 points. Max Edwards followed with 10, Cody Milks scored eight, Cooper Buffington finished with four and Jake Edwards ended with three.
