With just one week remaining in the Iowa high school football regular season, it means The Gazette’s 2023 football rankings are dwindling as well.
With the completion of week 8, Class 2A, 1A, A and 8-Player have now received their final poll ahead of the playoffs.
3A, 4A and 5A have just one more game to play before receiving their postseason assignments.
In 8-Player, two familiar names still represent in the rankings.
That is Winfield-Mt. Union and WACO.
WMU ends the regular season as the No. 1 team in the class.
The Wolves end the season at a perfect 8-0 after downing HLV last week 66-0.
Winfield-Mt. Union will host Belle Plaine (4-4) in the first round of the 8-Player playoffs.
Belle Plaine most recently lost to Iowa Valley 70-12.
WACO (6-1) still holds the No. 10 spot in the rankings.
The Warrior’s lone loss on the season came against WMU.
WACO didn’t play last week due to playing in week zero, but before that the Warriors topped English Valleys 51-6.
WACO will take on Baxter (5-3) in its opening round matchup.
The final team representing the Union area is Sigourney-Keota in 1A.
The Cobras (7-1) finish out the season at No. 6 in the Class 1A poll.
Sigourney-Keota finished off the regular season with a big 62-12 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont last week.
They will square off with West Central Valley (3-5) in the first round of 1A action.
