WMU drops marquee matchup, Pekin pulls past Columbus

Winfield-Mount Union suffered its first conference loss on Tuesday night’s girls basketball slate. Pekin sneaked past Columbus in a matchup of Union area teams.
Mediapolis 69, Winfield-Mount Union 44
The Wolves had a tough night in Mediapolis, as Bullette star Hallie Mohr dropped 31 points to knock WMU off the top line in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference’s North Division.
The loss bumped the Wolves third place in the North Division, behind unbeaten squads Mediapolis and Louisa-Muscatine.
Keetyn Townsley and Bradie Buffington coled the Wolves with 14 points in the loss. Jobey Malone had nine, and Melian Oepping finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.
Pekin 41, Columbus 27
Pekin’s defense smothered Columbus in a SEISC North game. The Panthers led 10-6 after one quarter, 23-12 at halftime and 36-22 after three.
Every Columbus players was held to single digits in the loss. Sera Vela’s nine points led the Wildcats’ charge.
West Burlington 69, New London 20
New London couldn’t get much offense going against the Falcons, who currently sit tied for second in the loss column in the SEISC South.
Natalie Burden scored seven points to lead New London in the loss. Emma Nye and Isabelle Nye each scored four.
English Valleys 52, Keota 39
A rough first half led to a South Iowa Cedar League loss for Keota at undefeated English Valleys.
English Valleys led 12-2 after one quarter and 25-7 at halftime. Keota outscored the Bears 32-27 in the second half, but it was too little too late.
Highland @ Louisa-Muscatine — POSTPONED
The Huskies will now travel to Louisa-Muscatine on Jan. 11, as Tuesday night’s girl-boy doubleheader was postponed.
