WINFIELD — Winfield-Mt. Union and New London girls basketball kicked off their seasons on Friday night with a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North and South clash.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, it was the Wolves taking the victory over the Tigers 39-26.
Defense made all the difference.
Winfield-Mt. Union got it’s offense going with a balanced attack as sophomore Madisen Kellogg and senior Lily Freeman jumped started the Wolves.
Meanwhile, the Wolves stunted the Tigers on the opposite end of the floor and before long WMU held a 11-5 lead after one.
New London found some momentum in the second quarter with junior’s Mylee Miller, Olivia Hester and Morgan Jones finding a rhythm, but WMU just edged the Tigers in the quarter 11-8.
At the halftime break, the Wolves held a 22-13 lead.
The third quarter turned out to be WMU’s most efficient and New London’s toughest.
WMU dropped in a game high 15 points in the quarter, while holding New London to just three. Heading into the fourth, the Wolves led 37-16.
The Tigers went on to outscore the Wolves 10-2 in the fourth, but the deficit was too great to overcome.
For WMU, Madisen Kellogg led with 20 points. Lily Freeman scored seven, Pacey Schlee finished with five, while Kaelyn Townsley and Suttyn Schlee both had two.
