WINFIELD — A win on Tuesday night would give the Winfield-Mount Union boys basketball team a death grip on the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division, and the Wolves weren’t about to let that opportunity go to waste.
WMU rushed past second-place Mediapolis 44-31, polishing off a regular season sweep of the Bulldogs and taking a two-game lead atop the standings with just four games left to be played.
“It would be a nice thing, but that isn't necessarily what our goal is,” said Wolves head coach Klay Edwards about a potential North Division title. “It's just part of what we try to do to get to that point, but we still have work to do.”
WMU jumped out to an early lead. The Wolves held a 9-7 advantage after one quarter, and exploded in the second, going up 26-13 on a deep 3-pointer by Carter Loyd at the buzzer.
“That felt good,” said sophomore post Abram Edwards. “It gave us momentum going into the second half, and we just kept playing our game.”
Edwards and Cam Buffington closed it out in the second half, getting bucket after bucket inside. Mediapolis could never get back within striking distance and the Wolves had a monster North Division win.
“It's pretty awesome,” said Buffington. “We've come along way from last year.”
Buffington and Edwards each scored 13 points in the win. Konnor Wade and Andrew Brown put up six apiece. Jake Edwards and Loyd both scored three.
WMU is now 15-1 overall and 12-0 in the North Division. Mediapolis is 11-4 and 10-2 in league play, still the closest team to the Wolves in the standings.
