Although the Union area uses The Gazette poll as our poll of record, it would be remiss not to acknowledge a major happening in the world of Iowa high school football polls.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association released its inaugural football rankings this week, and Union area team Winfield-Mount Union reigns as the No. 1 team in Class 8-Player.
WMU, which currently sits at No. 2 in The Gazette poll, as well as the Radio Iowa poll, and has been jumping between No. 2 and No. 3 in the Associated Press poll, holds the top spot in the IHSAA rankings over second-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
WMU has defeated two teams in the Class 8-Player poll. The Wolves went on the road to beat Central City, currently ranked No. 7 in the IHSAA rankings, and the aforementioned 10th-ranked Warriors.
Sigourney-Keota, which appears in The Gazette’s Class 1A poll, is not ranked according to the IHSAA.
The IHSAA’s polls for this week only go up to Class 2A. The Class 3A, Class 4A and Class 5A polls will begin next week.
