WMU volleyball bests Mt. Pleasant, Hillcrest Academy in Wilton

WILTON — Three area teams were in Wilton Saturday to compete for a tournament title, and one squad came one win away from a perfect night.

Winfield-Mount Union went 4-1 on the day, beating two other area teams in the process. Mt. Pleasant was 3-2, and Hillcrest Academy went 0-5.
WMU had four two-game sweeps, including both of its Union-area counterparts. The Wolves beat Mt. Pleasant 21-12, 21-7, getting seven kills from Melina Oepping in the process. Against Hillcrest, the Wolves rolled 21-11, 21-11.
WMU also swept Hillcrest and Burlington. The Wolves’ only loss was a two-set defeat at the hands of Wilton.
Mt. Pleasant defeated Burlington and Wilton in two-straight sets, as well as Hillcrest Academy. In the Panthers’ game against Hillcrest, they won 21-15, 21-9.
Along with their loss to WMU, the Panthers dropped one to Wilton.
Hillcrest’s closest game was against Midland. The Ravens nearly won the first set, falling 27-25. Midland closed it out with a 21-13 win in Set 2.
Fairfield winless at Linn-Mar tournament
MARION — It was an uphill climb for Fairfield at the Linn-Mar tournament. The Trojans fell against a quartet of area schools in an 0-4 day.
The Trojans lost two-set matches to Solon, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Pleasant Valley and hosting Linn-Mar.
Before Saturday, Fairfield won three of its first four games.
