NORTH ENGLISH - Winfield-Mt. Union couldn't muster enough offense to sneak past English Valleys in their district road game on Friday night. The Wolves played the Bears tight all game long, but EV escaped with a 30-20 victory.
The two teams traded blows in the first quarter, scoring two touchdowns apiece. The Wolves struck first when Daunte Oepping hit Christian Gerot on a 25-yard touchdown pass, making it 6-0 after the failed two-point conversion.
EV's Cole Stephenson tied the game with a two-yard touchdown run later in the period. The Bears converted for two to take an 8-6 lead.
Oepping connected with Juanito Piper for a 23-yard touchdown to give the lead back to W-MU. Jacob Ford ran it in for two points to put the Wolves up by six. The Bears responded with six of their own to tie it at 14-14.
The score stayed knotted up until the third quarter when EV jumped on top with a 29-yard touchdown pass, plus the two-point conversion. Oepping found Ford for a five-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter but the Wolves failed on their two-point try. EV tacked on eight more points in the fourth.
Oepping finished the night 7-15 for 152 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 84 yards. Gerot caught three passes for 62 yards and a touchdown.
