Top-ranked WMU football team moves on n Class 8-Player playoffs

WINFIELD - Playoff season in Winfield began with a bang on Friday night, as the top-ranked (Class 8-Player) Winfield-Mount Union football team smashed Belle Plaine 64-8.
The Wolves dominated from the get-go. WMU led 16-0 after one quarter and 48-8 at halftime before cruising to victory in the second half.
Cam Buffington rumbled along for 192 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in the win. Cole Milks ran for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Jake Edwards completed just five passes, but those passes went for 148 yards and three scores. He rushed for one touchdown as well.
Edwards’ passes were spread out, and he hit three different receivers for touchdowns. Buffington caught a 41-yard touchdown pass. Abram Edwards caught a 40-yard touchdown pass, and Carter Loyd scored on a 34-yard catch.
Lane Genkinger had an unbelievable day on defense. The junior recovered two fumbles and picked off a pass, which he returned 17 yards.
WMU (9-0) rolls into Round 2 on Friday night. Moravia (8-2) comes to town for the Round of 16. The wnner of that team will play either Don Bosco or WACO for a spot in the dome one week later.
