Wolves fall at L&M, storm back against Pekin

PACKWOOD - The Winfield-Mt. Union softball team is 2-1 after their first three games of the year. The Wolves fell 4-0 at Louisa-Muscatine on Monday, May 20, but bounced back with a 7-4 comeback win at Pekin on Thursday, and then took out Cardinal 7-1 on Friday.
The Wolves were held to just one hit in their loss against L&M Thursday. Keetyn Townsley, and eighth-grader, went 1-3 at the plate to lead the way.
L&M was able to score four unearend runs off of starting pitcher Madie Anderson. She gave up one in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. Anderson finished the game with six strikeouts, giving up six hits and two walks in the process.
W-MU trailed 4-0 entering the top of the fifth inning on Thursday at Pekin. The Panthers had scored one run in the first inning and three in the third. The Wolves scored seven runs in the fifth inning to earn the comeback victoyr, and Pekin was unable to fight back with more runs of their own.
Madie had a monster day in the circle, striking 19 batters out to earn the win. She gave up four unearned runs on five hits and two walks.
Anna Anderson, another eighth-grader, finished the day 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Anderson was 2-4 with a double as well. Kayreanna Sharar, Kyndal Townsley, Emma Haines, Keely Malone and Thea Urias each scored one run.
W-MU found themselves in another hole on Friday night in their home opener. The Wolves trailed 1-0 after the top of the first, and Cardinal held that lead till the bottom of the third.
The Wolves took the lead with four runs in the third inning, and added one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Molly Miller had the team's first home run of the year. She finished 2-3 with a homer, two RBIs and a run scored.
Keetyn went 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Anna was 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Madie threw all seven innings of the win, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks, while striking out 16 batters.
W-MU will be back at home tonight (Tuesday), when they host Wapello.
