WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mount Union football team welcomed in a tough non-district opponent for its 2024 Homecoming game, and things didn’t quite go as planned for the hosting Wolves.
WMU, short-handed due to injury and coming off a tough loss at WACO, saw its offense get haulted by the visiting Braves. Montezum ran away with a 55-16 victory.
The game was close early on, but a 21-point second quarter helped Montezuma turn an 14-6 first quarter lead into a 34-14 advantage by halftime.
In the second half, WMU couldn’t get much going on the offensive side of the ball. The Wolves were shut out in the third and fourth quarters, as the Braves ran away with victory.
Sophomore Cody Milks stepped in for injured starting quartereback Jake Edwards, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns, while getting picked off just once.
Milks’ favorite target was junior receiver Max Edwards, who caught seven passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. Lane Genkinger caught four passes for 31 yards and one score. Tayson Samuels had 23 yards receiving, and Nicholas Sparrow finished with 14.
Defensively, Genkinger led the Wolves with 9.5 tackles. Max Edwards had 6.5 tackles, and Cooper Buffington finished with five tackles and a fumble recovery.
WMU, now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in district play, will return to league action next week at English Valleys (1-3, 1-1).
