Wolves fall to ranked opponent

MARENGO - Winfield-Mt. Union tried their luck at undefeated and sixth-ranked Iowa Valley on Friday night, but much like the four teams before them, the Wolves fell short.
Iowa Valley won the game 84-22 to move to 5-0 on the season. It was W-MU's second-straight road loss.
The Wolves got off to a slow start, giving up the first 34 points of the game. W-MU scored teir first touchdown early in the second quarter, on a 13-yard pass from Daunte Oepping to Christian Gerot.
Trailing 64-6 in the third quarter, W-MU found the end zone again. Oepping scrambled ahead seven yards, and a Juanito Piper two-point conversion cut the lead to 64-14.
W-MU was outscored 20-8 in the fourth quarter. Noah Sparrow had his first touchdown pass of the year, finding Jacob Kongable on a 39-yard strike. Keagan Atkinson ran it in for two.
Oepping finished the night 13-26 for 148 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Sparrow was 2-3 for 67 yards and a score.
Gerot and Kongable co-led the receiving core with 67 yards and one touchdown each. Gerot caught four passes on the night, and Kongable caught two.
Jacob Ford had six catches for 54 yards. Grahm Hagge had one catch for 31 yards, and Piper caught two passes.
Piper's nine tackles led the defensive effort. The Wolves were unable to get any takeaways in the loss.
W-MU will have a tough team to face for homecoming this Friday, Sept. 21. The Wolves will take on H-L-V in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
