Wolves falter at Montezuma

MONTEZUMA - The Winfield-Mt. Union football team had their hands full on Friday night, playing against a stacked Montezuma squad. The high-scoring Braves were too much for the Wolves, as W-MU fell 78-33.
The Braves scored an impressive five touchdowns in the first quarter. W-MU struck once on a 56-yard run by Cam Buffington, which was followed by a Sully Scott two-point conversion, but Montezuma led 35-8 after one period.
Montezuma followed that by outscoring W-MU 17-8 in the second quarter. Buffington had another big run, this time scampering for a 49-yard score, and Abram Edwards ran in the two, but W-MU trailed 52-16 at halftime.
Montezuma's largest lead was 72-16 late in the third quarter. The Wolves scored two of the final three touchdowns, one on a Caleb Giese pick-six and one on a nine-yard run by Eli Miller.
Buffington finished the night with 213 rushing yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wolves. Miller had 66 yards and one score on the ground. Scott ran for 39.
Edwards was 2-for-4 throwing the ball for 27 yards and two interceptions. Coth completions went to Giese.
Buffington also led the defense, racking up 6.5 tackles. Chance Malone had 5.5 tackles on the night, and Noah Sparrow had five. Griffin Humphreys had one fumble recovery.
Montezuma quarterback Eddie Burgess had quite the game. He threw for 375 yards and five touchdowns, and ran for 91 yards and four scores.
W-MU is now 1-1 on the season. They'll hit the road for the second-straight week this Friday night when they play at Twin Cedars.
