WINFIELD ? W-MU got its first volleyball win of the season in its home opener against conference opponent Van Buren last night. The Wolves took all three games, never letting Van Buren score more than 17.
?Last week we had a lot of unforced errors and a lot of new varsity starters,? Head Coach Dave Pieart said.
But last night, Pieart didn?t see that same nervous group: ?We served particularly well, and our hitting was much improved,? he said.
The Wolves served 17 aces on the night, led by Anna Crawford with five. Erica Robison and Shelby Therme each aced four and Kassidy McLaughlin served two aces, while Alicia Escher and Katie Benson added one apiece.
The team also put down 24 kills, led in that category by Katlyn Malone, who had six. Therme added five, while Robison, Crawford and Emily Mathews each claimed four. Escher had three kills.
The Wolves still have things to work on as they prepare to compete in the West Branch Tournament on Saturday.
?We were scrambling well tonight, but we were scrambling too much,? he said. ?We have to work on controlling the offense.?
