WINFIELD — You can’t fault the effort of the Winfield-Mt. Union boys basketball team on Monday night.
The Wolves were flying around on defense all game long against visiting Danville during the Class 1A Substate 5 opening game, but the ball just didn’t go in the hole during a 40-34 loss.
The Wolves held Danville to 12 points less than the Bears’ season average, and even used a fantastic fourth quarter effort to cut a 35-23 deficit to just three points, but when the Wolves needed it most, the ball was just not going into the basket.
“Just looking at some stats, we were 1-for-14 from three, and we missed a bunch of layups,” said WMU head coach Klay Edwards. “It was just a really bad night to not be able to put it in the hoop.”
Danville led 11-10 after one quarter and 23-18 at halftime. WMU went ice cold in the third, scoring just five points.
“I honestly thought we had fantastic looks the entire night,” said Edwards. “But wow, we just couldn’t get anything to go down.”
The Wolves were led by Isaac Egli, who put in 13 points. Brian Fox had eight points. Nicholas Sparrow had five. Max Edwards finished with four points and eight rebounds, and Cody Milks had four points and four blocks.
It was the last game in a WMU uniform for Edwards, Sparrow and Grant Anderson, the team’s three seniors who saw the floor.
WMU ended the season with a 13-8 record. Danville (13-9) will play at top-seeded Notre Dame (21-2) in Thursday night’s quarterfinals.
Notre Dame 81, New London 45
The Tigers couldn’t pull off the upset against top-seeded Notre Dame, falling to the Nikes for the third time this season.
New London ended the year at 7-17.
Holy Trinity 66, WACO 50
The Crusaders were too much for the Warriors, thanks in part to 21 points from standout freshman Jack Rager. WACO finished the year at 11-11.
Pekin 79, Seymour 43
The Panthers did what they needed to do to get a quarterfinal clash with Holy Trinity Catholic. Pekin beat up on Seymour all night long.
Seniors Cole Millikin and Nolan Glick were nearly unstoppable in the game. Millikin scored 25 points, while Glick finished with 21.
Hillcrest Academy 58, Wapello 47
A 17-7 first quarter helped Hillcrest avoid an upset against a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division rival.
Kale Bailey had 24 points to lead Hillcrest, while Rowan Miller ended the night with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.
The Ravens will host Keota in the next round.
