Wolves into rankings

Winfield-Mount Union made some history with its volleyball season. Maybe it can do the same in basketball, although there is a lot more history in girls basketball. The Wolves have eight state tournament appearances (1971, 1975, 1982, 1983, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998) and two state championships (1995, 1996).

The Wolves showed up in the 14th position of Class 1A in the third rankings of the 2020-21 girls basketball season, which were released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

W-MU has compiled a 5-0 record already this season whereas Southeast Conference member Keokuk is ranked 15th in Class 4A without having played a game.

South Iowa Cedar League's Montezuma is No. 9 in Class 1A and Lynnville-Sully is No. 11.

River Valley Conference member West Branch is No. 1 in Class 2A and West Liberty is No. 2 in 3A.
