Wolves lose in overtime

WINFIELD -- The Winfield-Mt. Union boys took Louisa-Muscatine to overtime on Friday night, but couldn't quite pull off their first win before holiday break. The Wolves stormed back from a 13-point halftime deficit and led the game after three quarters, but in the end, L&M took it 77-71.
The Falcons had the Wolves' backs against the walls early, leading 24-11 after the first quarter. The two teams scored 11 apiece in the second quarter, and L&M took a 35-23 lead into the halftime break.
W-MU Came stampeeding back in the third quarter. W-MU outscored L&M 28-12 in the third, completely erasing the Falcons' lead and taking a 50-47 advantage in the fourth. L&M came back to tie the game at 63-63 at the end of regulation.
The Falcons offense had enough in the overtime period to pull out the road win. L&M outscored the Wolves 14-8 in the final period and survived W-MU by six points.
Christian Gerot had a huge game despite the loss. He scored 13 points, shooting 9-15 from the field, 3-6 from three-point land and 10-13 from the free throw line. Ty Yocum had a double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 16 rebounds, and Jared Arnold had 10 points.
Josh Burroughs and Juanito Piper had five points apiece in the loss. Graham Hagge finished the night with one point, as well as a team-leading four assists.
W-MU goes into the break with an 0-9 record. The Wolves will continue to look for their first win on Friday, Jan. 4, when they hit the road to take on Mediapolis.
