KEOSAUQUA — Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus came into Saturday’s district opener against Louisa-Muscatine having lost against the Lions in the regular season just one week earlier. The Wolves would flip the script in postseason play.
The Wolves used a great outing by Andrew Brown on the mound and a long ball by Cole Milks to oust L&M 11-3.
WMU had to come back from an early 1-0 deficit, but a three-run third and a three-run fourth helped that, as WMU/Columbus ran out to a 6-1 lead.
Louisa-Muscatine cut the lead to 6-3 with a two-run bottom of the fifth, but WMU scored five more runs in the sixth to put the game on ice.
Brown pitched the whole game for the Wolves, throwing 104 total pitches. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit batter.
Milks had just one hit on the day, but it was a big one. He was 1-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs. Grant Watson and Lane Genkinger each had three hits.
The win for the Wolves earned them a quarterfinal battle against Van Buren County on Wednesday night. The winner of that game will take on either Central Lee, West Burlington or Mediapolis in the semifinals. Central Lee and West Burlington play on Monday night for a spot in the 5 p.m. game on Wednesday.
On the other side of the Class 2A District 5 bracket, No. 2 Mid-Prairie will take on Wilton in one semifinal, while Durant and West Liberty go at it in the other.
