WINFIELD — Winfield-Mt. Union and Hillcrest Academy are 1-0 to start the 2025-26 high school girls basketball season.
The Wolves started the year off with a dominant win over New London on Friday night, beating the Tigers 59-18. The Ravens held off Moravia, 62-60.
It was all Wolves in Winfield fro the get-go. WMU scored 22 points in the first quarter, 14 of which came from Madisen Kellogg, who lit up the scoreboard all night.
WMU was up 22-5 after one period, 38-10 at halftime and 54-16 after three.
Kellogg went crazy, putting up 39 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wolves. Lilly Heckethorn added eight points. Suttyn Schlee had four. Quin Smith scored two, and pulled down eight boards. Katie Miller had two points and nine rebounds. Shaye Nelson and Josslyn Roen both scored two points.
“The girls did a great job of running the floor, making the extra pass, and finding the open teammate” said WMU head coach Mendy McCreight. “We looked up the court well and kept that consistency rolling.”
New London’s Megan Lee put up eight points in the loss. Paige Shull-Collins scored seven, while Katelyn Allen put in three.
Over in Kalona, the Ravens were involved in a wild one. Hillcrest was up 35-19 at halftime and 54-34 after three quarters, but Moravia came storming back to only lose the game by two.
The Mohawks put up 26 points in the fourth quarter to Hillcrest’s eight, as they cut into the lead.
Much like Kellogg, Claire Withrow showed she was ready to put up the points this season. The Hillcrest senior scored 33 points, hitting a ridiculous seven 3-pointers in the win.
Niva Helmuth added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Ravens. Brynna Boshart had seven points. Ruth Witthoft scored four. Maria Portillo and Addison Miller had five each, and Marryn Boshart scored two.
WMU and Hillcrest are now both 1-0 on the season. New London is 0-1.
