WINFIELD — A shorthanded Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team clinched a winning record for the 2025 season with a Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division win over Highland on Tuesday night.
The Wolves, who are dealing with some big time injuries at the net, were able to get past the Huskies in straight sets, winning 25-15, 27-25, 25-19.
“We’ve had to realign our lineup and just try different people at different spots,” said W-MU head coach Ashlei Venghaus. “Altogether, our team has really come through when it comes to taking what we have, and playing hard.”
The Wolves were already down Kynlee Buffington, who led the team in kills before her injury. Kellee Milks went down last week, and was the second-leading killer on the squad at that time.
W-MU dominated the first and third sets, but Highland had a big run in the second. The Huskies led the game 23-19 at one point, threatening to knot things up after falling in the first set, but the Wolves tied it up at 23-23 and then won four of the last six points.
Quin Smith led the way for W-MU at the net, tallying 10 kills. Katie Miller finished with seven. Madisen Kellogg dished out 22 assists, and Aubrey Valencia led the team with 15 digs.
The Wolves moved to 14-10 overall and 4-2 in conference play with the win. Highland is now 4-21 overall and 2-5 in conference play. The Huskies have dropped the last eight games.
Elsewhere in the SEISC North, WACO beat Lone Tree 25-8, 25-14 and 25-13. Pekin fell to Louisa Muscatine in a five-set thriller, falling 12-25, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 15-12, and Hillcrest Academy couldn’t knock off first-place Wapello, falling 25-11, 25-11, 25-13.
In the SEISC South, New London fell 25-6, 25-4 and 25-8 against West Burlington. Van Buren County put No. 2 (1A) Holy Trinity Catholic to the test but fell 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16.
It was a tough night for No. 5 (3A) Mid-Prairie, which lost a ranked River Valley South battle against No. 11 (2A) Iowa City Regina 25-23, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17. In the South Central Conference, Cardinal fell 25-9, 25-14 and 25-12 at Davis County.
