Wolves take postseason opener over Lions
Winfield-Mt. Union downs Lone Tree in 1A Region 2 First Round

WINFIELD — Winfield-Mt. Union kick started its postseason on a high note as the Wolves took down Lone Tree in four sets, 3-1.
The Wolves took the first set 25-21 before falling in the second 25-23. From then on out though it was all WMU as they took the final two sets 25-13 and 25-10.
WMU started out red-hot.
In set one, the Wolves jumped out to a 10-3 lead, however; the Lions continued to battle.
Slowly but surely, the Lions got back into it, but they could never gain the lead.
The two teams were separated by just one point at 11-10,15-14, 17-16 and late at 22-21.
WMU was able to take the first set after a Lone Tree hitting error and a pair of kills from Josie Nelson and Kaelyn Townsley.
Set two was all Lone Tree early on.
A 7-0 run by the Lions put them up 13-4 midway through the match.
Much like Lone Tree in set one, WMU wouldn’t give up.
The Wolves chipped away and after kills from Townsley and Kynlee Buffington the game was knotted at 15-15.
Three serves later and the Wolves took their first lead, 17-16, since it was 1-0.
From that point on, the Wolves and Lions tied five times, lastly at 23-23.
Lone Tree was able to secure it with back-to-back points.
Despite giving up the second set, the Wolves’ would miss a beat in the final two.
WMU jumped out to a 8-1 lead in the third set after a slew of kills from Buffington.
The rest of the way, the Wolves built leads of 12-6, 18-8 and 20-9.
They never looked back.
WMU got even better in the final. The Wolves created leads of 14-2 and 18-5, which was more than enough to get the job done.
Kellee Milks led the Wolves with 19 kills. Kynlee Buffington added 12 kills an Josie Nelson ended with seven.
Madisen Kellogg finished with 38 assists.
Nelson led in digs with 27. She also had six aces. Pacey Schlee added 17.
The Wolves improve to 13-10 and will take on Holy Trinity Catholic in the Regional two quarterfinals on Wednesday.
