FAIRFIELD — The Winfield-Mount Union boys basketball team is going to the state basketball tournament for the first time since 1996.
The Wolves held off Holy Trinity Catholic 46-41 in the Class 1A Substate 5 championship game, holding off a late Crusader rush that turned a 10-point halftime lead into as small as a two-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Cam Buffington scored 18 points to lead WMU. Jake Edwards had 11. Gabriel Hemsworth finished with nine, and Abram Edwards had eight.
Carter Loyd was the only other WMU player to see the floor. All five Wolves starters played from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
Winfield-Mount Union was given the No. 4 seed in the Class 1A state tournament, which begins on Monday, March 4. They will take on Lynnville-Sully at 12:15 p.m., with the winner playing either top-seeded North Linn or Woodbine in the second round.
A full story from this game will be online at southeastiowaunion.com this weekend, and will be in Tuesday’s edition of the Southeast Iowa Union.
