WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball team liked walking off last week so much, they decided to do it again on Tuesday night.
Just five days after a thrilling 6-5 extra innings win over Highland, WMU/Columbus beat Lone Tree by the same score, storming back from a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the seventh to score a thrilling Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division win.
On Tuesday, it was Kohlby Newsom that had the game-winner. Newsom stepped up to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in a 5-5 tie. On a two-strike count, Newsom lined one into the outfield to end it.
“I saw a high fastball, and I like the high ones,” Newsom said. “I had to see it and drive it.”
The RBI single completed a comeback that saw the Wolves capitalize on some shaky Lone Tree defense by juicing up the bases for the middle of their lineup. The Wolves had previously trailed by as much as three runs, at 4-1.
“These guys don't quit,” said WMU/Columbus head coach Nick Swanson. “They love to be around, and they love to learn, and it showed today.”
Down three runs in the bottom of the sixth, Cole Milks delivered the shot of the night, launching a 2-run home run to left field, which cut the lead to 4-3 and put the Wolves right back in it.
“I was really just trying to put the ball in play and try and bring us back,” Milks said. “I just swung the bat hard enough that it carried the ball where it needed to go.”
The Wolves got a quality start from freshman Trevor Phillips, who threw 4.1 innings, giving up just two runs (one earned), while striking out seven batters.
Milks finished 2-for-3 with a homer, a triple and two RBIs. Newsom was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Andrew Brown went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Grant Watson tallied a couple of hits.
WMU/Columbus moved to 3-4 overall with the win. The Wolves are now 3-2 in the SEISEC North, tied with Highland and Louisa-Musactine for second place, two games behind conference leader Hillcrest Academy.
