DES MOINES — The Winfield-Mount Union and WACO track and field teams qualified for a combined 10 events at the 2024 state track and field meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. WMU scored in three of its six chances.
Winfield-Mount Union tallied 12 points on the Class 1A boys’ team standings. Senior Gabe Hemsworth played a part in all 12.
The highest scoring event for the Wolves was the distance medley relay. The quartet of Sheadan Adams, Ty Scorpil, Hemsworth and Kohlby Newsom crossed the tape in 3 minutes, 38.47 seconds, for fourth place.
“I really wanted to win it, but it's really great,” Hemsworth said. “The team races are really fun. You get to run with the people you love, and that you go to school with every day.”
The distance medley team scored five points with its finish. Hemsworth added four more with a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the tape in 55.82 seconds.
Also scoring points was a the 4X400 team. The same quartet of Adams, Newsom, Scorpil and Hemsworth took sixth place, crossing the finish line in 3:28.29.
Newsom nearly added to the Wolves’ total. After coming back from dead last place after one lap, he finished ninth in the 800, crossing in 2:00.05.
“Everyone's first lap was about a second faster than I expected, so I was in last place,” Newsom said. “I had to throw my game plan out and just let the goose loose.”
The sprint medley team of Abram Edwards, Brendon Simmons, Luke Genkinger and Scorpil finished 19th place. The 4X200 team of Hemsworth, Adams, Edwards and Eli Miller placed 20th.
On the girls’ side, Josie Nelson nearly scored for the Lady Wolves, placing ninth in the 100-meter hurdles. She crossed the tape in 16.49 seconds.
The shuttle hurdle team of Tessa Huston, Suttyn Schlee, Aurey Meeker and Nelson took 13th. Quin Smith was 16th in the high jump. The 4X200 quartet of Nelson, Huston, Meeker and Smith finished 19th, and Meeker crossed 24th in the 100-meter dash.
WACO failed to score in any of its four events. The top Warrior placement was Chase Waterhouse’s 15th-place finish in the discus. He threw 138 feet, 5 inches.
The boys’ 4X400 team of Hayden Shelman, Isaac Rich, Gage Samo and Clayton Miller took 17th, in 45.24 seconds. The boys’ shuttle hurdle squad of Louden Huisenga, Samo, Casey Coakley and Clayton Miller finished in 18th. Miller was 19th in the long jump.
