WINFIELD - The Calamus-Wheatland girls basketball team had scored 40 or more points in eight-straight games leading up to Tuesday night's Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinal at Winfield-Mt. Union, but they were lucky to get past 30 against the undefeated Wolves.
WMU stifled the Warriors all night long en route to a 55-31 victory, the Wolves' 18th-straight.
WMU did it they way they've done it all year. The Wolves kept Calamus-Wheatland at 10 points or below in every quarter, and used a balanced scoring attack to slowly pull away with the victory.
WMU led 14-6 after one quarter and 24-16 at halftime. The Wolves stretched that lead to 36-24 after three periods and then piled on 19 points in the final eight minutes.
Bradie Buffington led the Wolves with 14 points in the win. Keetyn Townsley finished with nine points. Farrah Nelson had eight points and a team-leading six rebounds.
Jenna Buffington scored seven points on the night and led the Wolves with six assists. Kyndal Townsley had seven points. Jami Wilkerson finished with six. Jobey Malone and Melina Oepping had two each.
The 18-0 Wolves will now turn their attention toward an 18-1 Burlington Notre Dame squad in what will be a clash of Southeast Iowa Super Conference titans. That game will be played in Winfield on Friday night with the winner playingn either top-seeded Springville (19-4) or Prince of Peace (16-4) in the regional championship.
