FAIRFIELD — The Southeast Conference showdown between Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant delivered all the drama fans could ask for, culminating in a walk-off home run that sealed a 10-9 victory for the Trojans.
In a game that featured three lead changes and relentless scoring, it was Fairfield junior Dayson Workman who stole the spotlight.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Workman launched a solo shot over the left-field fence, lifting the Trojans to a dramatic win.
Mt. Pleasant struck first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Payton Walker crossed the plate in the first on an RBI double by J.C. Sitar. Walker then added an RBI of his own in the second, driving in Griffen Jones with a sacrifice fly.
Fairfield responded quickly, erupting for six runs over the third and fourth innings. Dain Burkhart got things going with an RBI single, followed by Aiden Westercamp’s two-run base hit that gave the Trojans a 3-2 lead.
Though Mt. Pleasant tied it in the top of the fourth with another RBI from Sitar, Fairfield answered right back. Spencer McCready, Luke Konczal, and Archer Kreuter each drove in runs, pushing the score to 6-3.
The Trojans tacked on two more in the fifth thanks to RBI hits by Jacob Crew, scoring Ethan Bisgard and Voss Richardson. Mt. Pleasant chipped away with two runs in the sixth, courtesy of Sitar and Zach Newton, narrowing the gap to 8-5.
Bisgard added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, making it 9-5. But Mt. Pleasant wasn’t done. The Panthers rallied in the top of the seventh, scoring four to tie the game.
Walker and Brayton Hutson both earned RBIs on bases-loaded walks, and Newton capped the surge with a two-RBI single to even the score at 9-9.
Just when it seemed extra innings were on the horizon, Workman delivered his game-winning blast.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 11-7 overall and 7-2 in conference play. Mt. Pleasant drops to 10-8 and 5-4 in the conference.
