Wrestlers claim title at Gary Curtis Invite

On Saturday, the Washington wrestling team ventured over to Highland High School to participate in the Gary Curtis Invitational. The Demons continued their strong season they have had thus far and picked up a tournament victory.
The Demons claimed the title by scoring 224 total points throughout the tournament, 68.5 points more than second place West Liberty, with nine wrestlers finishing in the top three individually.
The 224 points scored set a school record for most points in a tournament.
At 106 pounds, Walker Ikerd finished third, winning his quarterfinal match by pin fall before falling in the semifinals by the same decision.
Ikerd rebounded well in the consolation match, taking the victory with a 6-2 decision.
Up higher at 132 pounds, Kyle Anderson placed second with two wins by fall in the quarter- and semifinals until he fell in a 10-5 decision in the final match.
Austin Hazelett had a good Saturday at 138 pounds, winning his first two matches by pin fall, and then garnering a major decision victory in the finals for a first-place finish over West Liberty?s Ivan Escobedo.
In the 145 weight class, senior Michael Ellingson took a close victory in the semifinal match with a 14-13 decision before falling in the championship by pin fall.
Junior Trey Van Weelden also placed second, obtaining a win by fall in the quarterfinal and a win by injury in the semifinal, until dropping the championship match by pin fall in the third period.
One weight class higher at 160 pounds, Demon freshman Tristan Westphal-Edwards moved his way to the championship with a first-round bye and a pin fall victory in the semifinal match. Edwards then took first place with a 5-3 decision in the championship round.
At 170 pounds, Bryce Rickey won his first match by pin fall before losing in the semifinals to Columbus? Tucker Morrison in a 5-2 decision.
Rickey bounced back to obtain third place with a victory in the consolation match by two points in a 5-3 decision
A few classes higher at 182 pounds, Karlton Skubal took two pin fall victories to advance to the championship. Skubal fell in the final match to Wilton?s Bryce Oveson in a 5-2 decision.
Up in the heavyweight class, Mitchell Huisenga advanced his way to the championship with a 5-4 decision win in his first match and a victory by fall in his semifinals.
Huisenga fell to Regina?s Jared Brinkman by pin fall in the first period of the championship match.

Washington will host a meet on Tuesday, when English Valleys, Lone Tree and Tipton come to town.
