Wrestlers place seventh

Tristin Westphal-Edwards, Washington?s 3rd ranked 170-pound wrestler in the Class 2A, moved his season record to 28-1 on his way to a title Saturday at the Ed Hadenfeldt Wrestling Invitational in Solon. Westphal-Edwards received a bye in each of the first two rounds before pinning Solon?s Seamus Poynton in 1:28 in the semifinals.

The finals set-up as many expected with the only two ranked wrestlers in the bracket going head-to-head. Westphal-Edwards came out on top of Lisbon?s Class 1A, 5th ranked Bryce Werderman by a 7-2 decision.

The Demons, as a team, earned seventh place in the solid field that featured two ranked tournament teams, Lisbon and West Liberty, both #2 in their respective classes. Washington was handcuffed a little in the team race by leaving five regular contributors at home to heal up some nagging injuries.

?As a team we need to work on the mental side of things to move forward,? said Washington Coach Brent Van Weelden.

195-pounder Logan Escher and Tanner Murphy at 220-pounds each posted third place finishes for Washington.

?I?m really proud of how Tristin, Logan and Tanner wrestled. There were a lot of good kids in their brackets,? said Van Weelden.
