In front of his teammates, Washington?s Collin Zear signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Cornell College in Mount Vernon next year.
The senior, who was also part of the Washington bowling team, chose to play baseball because of experience.
?I?ve been playing baseball for a lot longer,? he says. ?It?s easier to stay more focused and not get burned out.
?There?s always good things happening and it?s just a more fun sport, I think.?
Cornell wasn?t his first choice, Zear says.
?I also looked at Wartburg and going to Central in Pella, but Cornell seemed liked the obvious choice for me.?
He chose Cornell for coach at the school.
?Coach [Seth] Wing has been spoken about highly by all of the alumni that go there,? Zear says.
?When I finally met him, that was easily the deal breaker. I love the guy. He?s great.?
With Zear on the team, he won?t be the only Washington graduate to be on the baseball team.
?Walker Breard is still up there hitting home runs. So I will join him next year for one year.
?When I visited there a few weeks ago, I had a chance to talk to him and he?s really excited to have me up there.?
There?s another reason he chose to go there and not just to play baseball.
?I really like their 18-day block schedule,? Zear says.
?It?s one class at a time for 18 days, then you get a long, extended weekend.?
When Zear signed his letter, some of the other baseball players were on hand. What was that like?
?It?s pretty cool. I?ve been playing with some of those guys for 10 years and I have a couple of best friends in there.
?Having them there with me makes it all easier. They along with coach Nathan Miller are all happy with my choice and are excited to see me move on.?
Zear says he is going to major in business and Spanish at Cornell.
