Welcome to the 2026 Spotlight on Washington, an annual section produced by The Southeast Iowa Union that highlights the people, services and organizations that help shape everyday life in Washington.
Designed as a practical guide for both longtime residents and those new to the community, Spotlight on Washington brings together information on local government, schools, health services, parks, churches and community resources. The goal is to make it easier for readers to connect with the institutions and individuals that keep Washington moving forward.
The Southeast Iowa Union has served Washington and the surrounding area for generations. The newspaper operates from its office at 111 N. Marion Ave. in Washington, publishing in print twice a week and providing daily online coverage of local news, events and civic affairs. Through that coverage, the Union documents not only milestones and accomplishments, but also the day-to-day work that supports a strong community.
Washington continues to earn recognition at the state and national level, reflecting ongoing investment in quality of life, cultural opportunities and community development. At the same time, local reporting consistently shows that the foundation of the city remains its people — residents, volunteers, educators, public servants and business owners who contribute in visible and behind-the-scenes ways. Like many Iowa communities, Washington continues to balance long-standing traditions with changing needs, a theme reflected throughout local coverage.
As you read through this Spotlight, you’ll find a snapshot of Washington in 2026 — a community with a wide range of amenities, a commitment to local engagement, and a shared interest in maintaining a place that works for those who call it home. Whether you’re looking for a new service, learning more about a familiar organization, or gaining a broader view of the community, this section is intended as a starting point.
