Welcome to the 2021 Spotlight edition.
The Southeast Iowa Union is pleased to bring you the annual section that shines a light on many amenities within the community. Spotlight is a resource to help Washington residents, new and established, connect with the people, places and resources that keep the community running.
This section contains information on local officials, schools, health services, churches and parks. It is produced by the Southeast Iowa Union, a Monday through Friday local paper located at 111 N. Marion Ave. in Washington.
Washington has been named as one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America, with plenty of perks like a thriving downtown, lively events and a short drive to Iowa City.
As for what makes Washington so special, the answer usually comes down to one thing: the people.
“We all look out for each other and it feels like one giant family,” Chamber of Commerce Director Michelle Redlinger said. “I genuinely want to do my best because I know I'm representing the people that I enjoy life with.”
Local business owner Isabella Santoro said the friendly environment made Washington the perfect place to call home.
“What really sells this place is the gorgeous downtown, Guinness World record holding movie theater, beautiful trails, and the best, kindest, friendliest people you’ll ever meet,” she said. “It’s the perfect balance between safe and fun, family-friendly and appealing to the youth, conservative and accepting. It’s an oasis from the chaotic world of big cities, traffic, pollution and anonymity.”
Washington school district Superintendent Willie Stone said he was consistently impressed with the community’s friendliness.
“We moved our family here four years ago, and we were instantly accepted,” he said. “There is never a lack of people willing to help and pitch in.”
Mayor Jaron Rosien said those people were essential to the vibrant city of 7,000.
“Washington citizens are the fabric of our community,” he said. “Our people make the place, and that place is welcoming and thriving.”
