‘What makes Washington special?’
Mar. 21, 2024 5:08 pm
Welcome to the 2024 Spotlight edition.
The Southeast Iowa Union is pleased to bring you its annual section that shines a light on amenities in Washington. Spotlight is a resource to help Washington residents, new and established, connect with the people, places and resources that keep the community running.
This section contains information on local officials, schools, health services, churches and parks. It’s produced by The Southeast Iowa Union, a local paper located at 111 N. Marion Ave. in Washington, which prints twice a week, and publishes articles online every business day.
Washington has been named one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America, with plenty of perks like a thriving downtown, lively events and a relatively short drive to Iowa City. It’s designated one of the state’s “Great Places” by the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, an “All-Star Community” by the Iowa League of Cities, and a winner of the Iowans Unite Community Contest.
As for what makes Washington so special, the answers are as varied as the community members we asked.
Some say the town gets its appeal from those very community members.
“What makes Washington special? The incredible people who live here,” said Maddie Widmer, a financial adviser in town, and board president of Main Street Washington. “Together we've created a community that is welcoming, bright, and full of opportunities to work and play.”
Some say it comes down to the city’s roots, both metaphorical or plant-based.
“What makes Washington Special is our excellence in agriculture, from land to livestock,” said farmer Kerri Bell, who is secretary of the Washington and Keokuk County Corn and Soybean growers. “It is the generosity of the people, the appreciation for history, the spirit of community and the heart of our leaders.”
Washington Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Pam Green said she simply appreciated the small-town atmosphere.
“Having lived in Washington County most of my life and as a nurse, I cherish the families, co-workers and friends who remain in my circle,” she said.
Others, still, see Washington’s beauty through the work they and others carry out for the community.
“God is doing great works through Washington UMC to benefit the community,” said Washington United Methodist Church Pastor Anthony DeVaughn, who added that he was also fond of the “good service and tasty food at the restaurants in and close to downtown Washington.”
