Tips for car care for spring and summer

As winter ends and spring begins, it is important to ensure that your car is in proper working order.
“Winter time, a lot of the time, is hard on alignments with the pot holes,” said co-owner Keith Hyde of Fairfield Tire and Service.
While a mechanic checks the alignment you will want your tires checked as well.
Hyde says that having enough tread on your tires is important as we continue into rainy season.
“We’re coming up on rainy season, hopefully we’re going to get some rain, so we need to make sure we have enough tread to prevent hydroplaning,” said Hyde.
“The results are reduced traction, not much braking ability, and little steering ability,” the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) says of the dangers of hydroplaning.
Additionally, the DOT urges drivers to check their windshield wipers so they can see to the best of their ability when rain already hinders how far one can see.
Hyde had other advice on things to check up on this spring.
“Another thing we are seeing a lot of right now is leaks on engines,” said Hyde. “Because it got so cold that some of the seals have dried up and we’re starting to notice more oil leaks and stuff like that on engines this year.”
Not changing your oil every 3,000 miles or six months leave your car at risk of poor engine performance or even complete engine failure according to the Firestone Complete Auto Care website.
With the great weather people are itching to get out and explore the world again.
Hyde suggests having your mechanic do a once-over of your vehicle before hitting the road.
“If you’re planning on doing any road trips... especially with Memorial Day coming up, its a good idea to take your car to a shop,” Hyde said “We [Fairfield Tire and Service, Inc.] call this a trip check. We make sure all suspension and brakes are ready to go so you don’t have trouble out on a trip.”
Call your mechanic today and ensure your car is as ready for spring as you are.
