Kristin Miller and Jen Stever of Renovations on Main LLC in Fairfield are nearly complete with a remodeling project at 2574 243rd Street in Fairfield, a small development off Glasgow Road. The house they are remodeling was built in 1992.
The Union caught up with them to inquire about what inspired them to remodel the home and the work they’ve put into it.
Q: What made you want to remodel the house?
A: First, the story behind this house is longer than you’d think. Jen and I love projects and we noticed a shortage of move-in ready homes. We are always being asked to give advice on remolding projects that includes layouts and finishes. This house was one of those. As soon as we drove back to the location, we were excited.
Q: What condition was the house in before you remodeled it?
A: This particular house was gutted and sat unfinished for years. Its occupants were furry, so we had a major clean out (removing insulation, etc. and then stripped it to the studs.
Q: What have you remodeled inside?
A: Everything under the roof is new.
Q: Which rooms did you remodel?
A: This is a total home renovation. We moved and reconfigured the layout, changing the walls to deliver what we hear our clients request most. Our palette is neutral.
Q: What will happen to the house once you’re done?
A: We will be offering the home for sale and plan to throw a fun open house when it is done.
Q: Did you do all the remodeling yourself?
A: No, we called in the experts. We hired out electrical, plumbing, drywall, concrete, septic, and all the majors. We had the vision and like to get our hands dirty.
Q: Is this the first time you've done a major remodel, or have you done it before?
A: It’s not our first rodeo. We have both remolded homes, offices, and helped clients for many years.
Q: How does this remodel compare to those earlier ones?
A: This is just like all the others, only the first house Jen and I have done together. It’s basically using all the skills we’ve used before just combining our talents.
Q: Can you tell me about the hours and hard work you've put into the project?
A: Real estate has no predictability when it comes to a schedule. We started this in the winter, during what we consider the slower months. We've rushed to an appointment or two after a quick change of clothes with paint in our hair. However, it’s all about time management. It’s mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and all nighters. While we have all grown a bit tired of talking about Fairfield’s housing shortage, getting involved (and dirty) is our small part of the solution.
