Benton Community lost in the first round of the 3A state softball tournament to Dubuque Wahlert, 10-0, in five innings.
Benton had three hits, with singles from Emma Townsley, Layna DeMoss and Calista Nolte. Benton left six runners on base, Wahlert left 3. Benton had three errors. Wahlert had one.
On the mound, Jessa DeMoss threw for 4 2/3 innings, allowed eight hits, 10 runs (eight earned), walked three and struck out two. Wahlert’s Julia Roth allowed three hits, walked two and struck out five. Wahlert had three home runs.
Benton (28-15) faces Saydel (23-7) at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, in consolation action. Wahlert (32-8) faces Davenport Assumption (33-6) in the semifinal. The other semifinal games puts Williamsburg (34-9) against Estherville Lincoln Central (32-3) on July 19.

Benton edged Saydel in their consolation game at the state tournament in Fort Dodge, 3-2.
Benton had three hits. Hannah Greiner was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Nolte had a single and one RBI. The team had two errors. Saydel had one. Saydel left 10 runners on base. Benton left three.
Jessa DeMoss threw for seven innings, allowed six hits, two runs (one earned), walked four and struck out six. Dakota Lake of Saydel threw for six innings, allowed three hits, three runs (one earned), walked three and struck out 10.
The win tied Benton with Davis County for fifth place at the tournament.
