American Legion Auxiliary Unit 29 Leon Beatty of Washington has chosen four local girls to attend the annual session of the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State on June 16-21 on the campus of Drake University, Des Moines.
Attending this year’s event are: Ellie Bell, and Sophie Bell, daughters of Lance and Kerri Bell, Keota; Maggie Morgan, daughter of Jennifer and Marty Morgan, Washington; and Katie Bea Donnolly, daughter of Steve and Bonnie Donnolly, Washington.
They are attending with others who have also completed their junior year of high school. The individuals will learn through a “hands-on” experience about the political system involved in the government of Iowa. Throughout the week, the girls will campaign for office, create party platforms, hold city, county and state elections and run their own cities. In addition to their political activities, the girls will hear several motivational speakers and several local and state government officials. The culmination of the week will be on Friday evening with the inauguration of the newly elected State officials. The inauguration program will be held on Friday night on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines.
Maggie Morgan is the daughter of Jennifer and Marty Morgan, of Washington. She is involved in archery during the school year. Maggie volunteers at Kirkwood for Kids, Marr Park Summer Camp, and Kids Camp at Lincoln Elementary School. She also works at Circa 59 in Halcyon House.
Katie Bea Donnolly is the daughter of Steve and Bonnie Donnolly, of Washington. She will be a senior in fall 2019, graduating in May 2020. Katie has been involved in the following during high school: freshman and sophomore years – Business Professionals of America Club, Junior Optimist International Club, Peer Helper at Stewart Elementary, Washington High School Girls Bowling Team, Prairie Flower Baptist Church Youth Group and AWANA Leader; junior year – National Honor Society member, Business Professionals of America Club, Peer Helper at Stewart Elementary, Washington High School Girls Bowling Team, Prairie Flower Baptist Church Youth Group, after-school employee at the YMCA Day Care.
Sophie Bell is the 17-year-old daughter of Lance and Kerri Bell, of Keota. She is currently a junior at Washington High School and Kirkwood Community College, where she is involved in Silver Cord, Honor Roll, and National Honor Society. She is also involved in FFA, where she is currently holding the office of president in the Washington FFA Chapter. In 4-H, she is currently the president of the Green Acres 4-H Club and active on the Washington County 4-H Council. She has projects in the areas of Breeding Beef, Market Beef, Market Hogs, Rabbits, and many non-livestock projects. Sophie is a member of the Washington United Methodist Church, where she is active in Youth Group. She is also an active Washington County Corn & Soybean Growers member and an Iowa Corn Growers member. In addition, she’s an Iowa Cattlemen’s Association member and a Washington County Cattlemen’s Association member, where she is currently the Beef Princess for Washington County. She is also an Iowa Hereford and Junior Hereford Association member and a Washington County Pheasants Forever member. Aside from all of her activities, she is an active member on her family farm, where they raise corn and soybeans and have a small cattle herd.
Ellie Bell is the 17-year-old daughter of Lance and Kerri Bell, of Keota. Activities she is involved in are: Washington FFA Chapter secretary and Land Lab secretary; Washington County 4-H – Green Acres 4-H Club treasurer; Washington United Methodist Church Youth Group member; Washington County Corn & Soybean Growers Association member; Washington County and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association member; Iowa and Junior Hereford Association member; Washington County Pheasants Forever member; Silver Cord participant; and Kirkwood Community College student.
